Parts of the saxophone mouthpiece and their function.

The Siderails provide the "road" for the reed to travel on. The facing is created upon the siderails and should be even accross the face of the window. The side rail thickness differs greatly from piece to piece and I have found that it's thickness does NOT affect the sound as long as the window is opened sufficiently. A correctly crafted siderail will allow for smooth scalar flexibilty and even response.
