The baffle is between where the tiprail ends and the chamber begins. It is primarily responsible for how the air flows through the mouthpiece. There are a million different baffle configurations and "in general" work upon the Bernouli principle similar to an aircraft wing. The curve dictates whether the air speeds up or not. Higher baffles normally produce brighter sounds.
